It’s a million can march for the Uptergrove Public School.
The Ramara-area school held a special assembly yesterday (THU) to acknowledge the 2011 goal of raising 1 million non-perishable food items in their 7th Annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
Members of the O-P-P and area fire departments were also on hand at the assembly and to help escort into the front entrance of the school an 18-wheeler containing the million food items that will go to local food banks and the Salvation Army.
Grade 7 teacher and food drive organizer Dave Clark says they try to donate the food raised to every food bank that they can.
He says they also try to collect food for specific needs.
He says they were up at 4 A.M. shopping at the Wal-Mart in Orillia to purchase the food for the food drive.
Clark says the food is donated by the students of the school and their parents.
He says some have sold stuff and donated the money to the food drive.
He says the school has had businesses call them inquiring about donating to the food drive.
Clark says this food drive is about the students who participate in this great initiative.
He says when a student sees how much food they have raised and is proud of what they have done, that shows that the school and the community are raising great students.
Clark says all the support from the community shows that he is living in the right place.
He says he has been living in the area for 21 years and realizes that people will jump on to a cause when they see that everybody is involved in it.
He says he is still amazed that the one school in a small community can raise over a million cans of food.
