An outbreak of a Norwalk like virus at Orillia’s Soldiers Memorial Hospitla has resulted in the rescheduling of some surgeries and out-patient clinics.
The Soldiers One medical unit has been in outbreak since December 16 when 3 patients and 7 staff exhibited signs and symptoms of a Norwalk-like virus which include the sudden onset of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Two additional staff has also reported signs and symptoms since then.
With the hospital unable to admit patients onto the unit, the emergency department has backed up with patients who have been admitted into hospital but dont have an available bed. As many as 14 patients were waiting in Emergency as of yesterday
In order to alleviate the backlog, the hospital has decided to temporarily open ten beds, five each on the Soldiers-Two, and Harvie-Two units. However, in order to operate those beds the hospital will draw upon staffing in the surgical and outpatient clinic areas.
The outbreak declaration on Soldiers One could be lifted as early as Saturday morning if no new cases arise.
