The OPP are sounding the alarm about an elaborate form of money fraud that has hit the Orillia area.
OPP arrested a 37 year old Oshawa male last Wednesday (Sept 14) after two Orillia residents were nearly cheated out of 40 thousand dollars.
Constable Peter Leon says the scam is generally called “white money fraud.”
The scammers will equip themselves with a special white paper that is embossed – the scammer then places it under a black light which makes the white money appear real.
The scammer then asks for a legit bank note, which is placed in a bag between two pieces of the white paper along with a liquid solution and a type of powder which is black in colour.
When the three items are removed from the bag, it appears to be three identical bills with different serial numbers.
All of this is carried out under a guarantee of making some quick money.
The local couple apparently became wise to the scheme and contacted the police before any transactions occurred.
Constable Leon says the OPP are continuing to drive home the point that if something seems to be good to be true – it likely is.
