The gift of life walk goes tomorrow, Sunday at Orillia’s Tudhope park.
The 5 K walk is to help raise funds and awareness about kidney disease and treatment.
Local dialysis nurses and patients are working to bring more exposure to kidney health issues through the 5-kilometre Give the Gift of Life Orillia Walk.
Sara Milligan is a dialysis nurse at Soldiers Memorial Hospital and co-ordinating the walk to raise money for the Kidney Foundation of Canada for research, patient education and support.
Jennifer Nick’s mother undergoes the treatment three times a week and says she will be walking Sunday for her mother.
Last year, there were only seven people on the walk. This year, Milligan is hoping to get at least 50 walkers.
All the staff of the OSMH dialysis unit, healthy patients and their friends and family are going to collect pledges and walk.
Milligin says when people have to have treatment three times a week, it takes over their lives as well as the lives of their families, as they just cant pack up on a whim and take off on vacation.
Registration takes place at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m. Breakfast will be available for walkers and there will be prizes, which have been donated by local businesses.
