Premier Dalton McGuinty visited Goderich yesterday, to tour the devastation left by the F3 tornado that struck on Sunday. The Premier was stunned by the damage caused by the twister and pledged 5 million dollars in aid for the disaster and relief fund.
McGuinty’s main message to the people of Goderich is that they are not alone and that the rest of Ontario is on their side. He sent sympathy to the friends and families of those whe were effected by the disaster. He says that Goderich is a beautiful town with a lot to offer tourists. Adding the main thing is that everyone is safe and secure, the premier says the re-building process can now take place.
Support is coming in from around the province. Communities are sending firefighters and residents to help in the cleanup effort. And Mayor Delbert Shewfelt is vowing to repair his town and says council will convene today to discuss the help they’re getting from the province.
About 40 percent of the homes in Goderich have had their power restored and hydro officials estimate that 90 percent of the community will have power by the end of the week. 30 employees of Union Gas are working to repair damage and to restore service.
One man died and almost 40 people were injured by the tornado.
