The swimmer in trouble was in ten feet of water, about a hundred metres from the shore at about five in the afternoon when high winds blew up, producing metre-high waves.
A man from Oakville tried to swim out to help, but had to turn back before collapsing on the beach. He was pronounced dead at the hospital in Midland.
Two other men made it to the swimmer who was in trouble and hauled him safely from the water.
