Its not buried treasure, but a lot of interesting things are being discovered about Orillia’s historic Opera House as a result of foundation restoration and waterproofing work bring done to the foundation.
Opera House general manager Krista Storey says excavation around the structure has revealed at least a couple of windows that were below ground level.
She says one of the windows has bars which indicates this may have been part of the jail cell area of the old building back in the late 18 hundreds.
Storey also says they have found evidence that tunnels led out of the building to the north in the direction of the old Fire Hall on Peter Street.
She says all these little clues are helping them put together the puzzle of what the historic building looked like back in 1895
Storey says this information might provide some answers.
She says they now are cataloguing these artifices and hopefully they can put them on display and even put together a book dealing with the history of the building
