For the 4th straight year, the Karen flag is flying in Orillia.
The flag was raised during a ceremony yesterday – it is meant as a symbol of human rights for the Karen people and also of all Burmese citizens whose basic human rights are denied by the Burmese regime.
The flag raising is part of the City of Orillia’s adoption of Project Umbrella Burma – or PUB – which is a group working with Burmese ethnic groups, particularly the Karen and those in Eastern Burma.
Mahn Kyawswe, President of the Karen Canadian Community, was on hand for the flag raising.
He says he is a big supporter of Project Umbrella Burma.
PUB Board Member Frank Brewster says he has visited Burma and has witnessed human rights abuses first hand.
He says he’s proud of the work PUB continues to do for the Burmese people.
