Recent collisions involving vehicles and pedestrians has the OPP getting the word out on road safety.
Constable Shannon Petryshyn with the Orillia OPP Detachment says it’s important for both motorists and pedestrians to stay alert and exercise a little common sense when they’re out and about.
She says even if you have the right of way, you should be aware of your surroundings and make sure you’re all clear before driving or walking into an intersection.
Petryshyn says pedestrians should especially make sure to make eye contact with motorists before crossing the street to ensure they’re aware of you.
Of particular concern at intersections is pedestrians not staying on the sidewalk when waiting out a red light.
Petryshyn says she sees too many people stepping out onto the street – which blocks motorists from making a legal right turn at a red light.
For motorists not yielding to pedestrians when they have the right away – Petryshyn says there are some stiff fines for drivers who choose not to follow the rules of the road.
She adds if you regularly see bad driving practices in your neighbourhood – call the police.
