We are often reminded to check our smoke detectors in our homes – but the same applies to the cottage as well.
Orillia Fire Prevention Inspector Terry Duff says it’s just as important to have smoke detectors on every level of your cottage and outside of all sleep spaces as it is to have them at home.
Duff says sometimes accidents are more likely to happen at the cottage simply because that’s usually the place we all go to unwind – which could lead to forgetfulness.
Duff says in addition to working smoke detectors, your cottage should also have carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers.
He also says mapping out an escape plan with your family is important – as well as practicing that escape plan.
Duff adds the most common mistakes leading to most fires often happen in the kitchen.
He says never leave your cooking unattended and always keep a properly fitting lid handy in case of flare-ups.
