Local community leader, former broadcaster and politician Pete McGarvey finally got his university degree at the age of 83 today from Lakehead University.
The Orillia campus commemorated McGarvey with an Honorary degree in Humane letters during today’s (Saturday) convocation ceremony.
McGarvey says that over the years he’s had many lucky breaks, some successes and some set-backs, but he calls today the thrill of a lifetime.

The two honorees celebrated along with 308 Orillia Campus grads, the first grads of the campus’ charter class that started back in 2006.
McGarvey spoke to the class during the ceremony and relayed some advice, telling them they are “well equipped to do what you want to do” and to “shoot for the moon”.
Students receiving honorable mentions today include:
Recipient of the ‘Lloyd Dennis Award, Jodi Bernhardt-Gay.
Recipient of the ‘ Orillia Campus Dean’s Medal’, Jessica Clark.
