Its a school bus with a difference.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Simcoe Muskoka setting up a program in Orillia where volunteers will walk children to school rather than have them take a school bus or be driven by their parents.
Foundation spokesperson Christine Drury says the whole idea behind this is to get the children exercising more which in turn will encourage a healthier lifestyle.
She says the Safe Walks to School program has been a success in other communities in Simcoe County and now they want to get one operational here in Orillia.
Drury says the concept is to get kids either walking or riding their bikes to school, but in a safe atmosphere and accompanied by volunteer adults.
She says volunteers will make sure the routes they take are safe as far as sidewalks are concerned, safe places to cross the road and whether the sidewalks are plowed in the winter.
