A group of students from Park Street Collegiate Institute here in Orillia are going to the UN – figuratively speaking of course.
They are joining students from eight other high schools in Simcoe County for the Annual Model UN Assembly.
Mike Ramsay, Chair of this years event, says the event has been around for 25 years.
He says the participating students have been given a country to represent – meaning they need to be extremely knowledgeable about that country and it’s stance on various issues.
Ramsay says the students will be debating issues such as electronic waste disposal, the death penalty, and the workings of the UN Security Council.
The aim of the event is to give the students a chance to gain a better understanding of world issues while developing public speaking skills.
The big debate happens at the Simcoe County District School Board Education Centre on May 17th
