One of the largest land-claim settlement offers in Canadian history is in the hands of Chippewas of Rama First Nation. The Coldwater-Narrows reserve claim involves about 10,000 acres of land, which runs through the Atherley Narrows around Lake Couchiching to the foot of Mississaga and northwest to Waubaushene Bay.
According to the Orillia Packet & Times, the Government of Canada tabled a monetary settlement offer with four First Nations involved in the Coldwater-Narrows claim. Simcoe North MP Bruce Stanton says the offer is monetary because the land is already occupied. Stantion indicates the offer is worth more than $150 million.
The money would be split between the Chippewa Tri-Council, including Rama First Nation, Beausoleil First Nation on the southern tip of Georgian Bay, and Georgina Island First Nation in Sutton and the Chippewas of Nawash near Owen Sound.
