Two people are dead following an early morning police chase in the Orillia area.
OPP tried to stop a vehicle that was travelling northbound on Highway 11 in Oro-Medonte Township early this morning, but the driver refused to stop. Police deployed a spike belt when the vehicle approached the 15th line, but the vehicle continued on the highway, before exiting at Memorial Avenue in Orillia.
Because of the area and the speed of the suspect vehicle, the OPP stopped the chase. The vehicle continued north on Memorial where the driver lost control and struck a hydro pole. The two occupants, a 28-year old male and a 19-year old female were pronounced dead at hospital.
Memorial Avenue is closed from Barrie Road to James Street, while police investigate. Motorists are advised to stay away from the area.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in to investigate.
