The Mayor of Oro-Medonte is very much aware of the opposition to the City of Orillia’s recent decision to impose a “fire fee” for non-residents who get into an accident within city limits.
City Council recently approved the plan to charge a $410 per hour fee to visitors involved in accidents where Orillia’s fire department responds.
Oro-Medonte Mayor Harry Hughes says it all started with one area municipality implementing the move – and now all of the surrounding communities are simply following along.
Hughes says if his community were to implement the same policy – he would want standards put in place for different situations.
He says this will address the issue of several fire trucks showing up at a minor accident – which he adds is unnecessary.
Hughes adds as insurance companies are called on to pay these fees – insurance rats are sure to rise for everyone.
