Today is the first day of spring, and that means many kids will be getting the bicycle out of storage to head out for a spin.
However, Orillia OPP Community service Officer Gerry Dwyer says before parents let the kids take the bike out they should check it out to make sure everything is working properly.
Ensure the brakes are operational and you have reflectors on the rear and a light for the front if you plan on riding after dark.
Dwyer also says the most important thing is to wear a helmet, as the vast majority of injuries bikers receive are a result of not wearing any head protection.
As for those using roller blades, he says they are off limits on almost every street in Orillia as are skateboards.
Constable Dwyer also says anyone riding a bike or using roller blades should avoid listening to their mp3 players.
He says its important that people be aware of the traffic around them and if they are listening to music they cant do that.
Dwyer also says bicycles are considered vehicles and people should ride and text message at the same time.
