Tragic fires, like the one we saw in Orillia earlier this week happen unexpectedly, that’s why being prepared can save your life.
Fire Prevention Inspector Terry Duff recently spoke with Sunshine 89.1 and gave some life saving pointers.
Duff says your life is worth more then $20 – so it’s time to go out and get yourself all the necessary fire safety tools, he says it’s not just a tip, it’s the law.
Duff points out that fires always happens when you least expect it, so being prepared is essential for your survival, a house can go into flash-over within 3 minutes so every moment is vital.
He says that if you find yourself in a fire and have practiced, it’s going to become easy for you to get out, but without that practice panic can set in making it difficult to stay calm and exit the building safely.
Duff says everyone in the family should know two ways out of each room in the house, and should practice their fire exit strategy once a month.
This May through September the Orillia Fire Service is bringing back their Alarm for Life program. Duff says officers will be going door-to-door to make sure that you have working smoke alarms on all floors of your home. If you don’t they will provide you with one, and will give you a day to install it before they hand you a fine of $235
