About half way through the month, more local smokers then ever before, are trying to stay away from tobacco for the chance to win some great prizes.
More than 2,600 people from this area are part of the record 36,217 from across the country who have signed up for the annual Driven To Quit challenge and a chance to win a new car.
Those who quit successfully for the month have a chance to win either a Honda hybrid CR-Z or Insight, one of two $5,000 vacation getaways, or one of seven regional prizes of a $2,000 gift card.
Public Health Nurse Shawna Fraulick says its important to take it one day at a time, or even one hour at a time if you are finding it difficult.
Tips to butt out include changing your routine, avoiding the smoking area, after dinner, get up from the table and do something different, and if you are worried about being influenced by others, stay away from people or situations that test your willpower.
Fraulick says not to worry though if you slip and use tobacco, just start fresh and try again – you may not qualify for a prize but its worth the effort.
