Moonstone residents asking Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop to go to bat for thier small rural school.
Some members of the Moonstone Elementary Enhancement Team met with Dunlop Wednesday and another group will meet with again Thursday at his Orillia pre budget meeting in an effort to keep Moonstone Public School open.
The Simcoe County District School board wants to close the school because it would cost too much to fix up its electral and structural systems, and bus the students to an upgraded Coldwater School.
However parents of students at Moonstone Public have joined forces to battle that move.
Parent Randy Hazlett says four years ago the group prevented the board from closing the school, and once again they are marshalling their forces to try and keep it open.
He says the school is the centre of this small rural community and they want Garfield Dunlop to take their concerns to the Minister of Education.
Hazlett says the Ontario government should provide the same level of support to rural schools as they do to schools in larger urban areas.
He says more than 200 people have rallied together to try and keep this school open.
Hazlett says he believes that Ministry of Education officials in Toronto dont understand how important small rural schools are to communities like Moonstone.
