Orillia City Council looks to be moving ahead with a plan to reopen the Orillia Community Centre for local use for a trial project.
A recommendation was put forward by City recreation staff to rent out the community centre for dryland uses such as indoor soccer, lacrosse and other sports.
The proposed trial period would last two months and council is currently considering the months of February and March.
The Community Centre was closed in January of 2009 for some structural concerns, but with those issues addressed it could be put back in use.
With the new Rotary Place Arena the demand for ice at the facility has subsided and it is no longer maintained.
The City is currently having to heat certain areas of the facility to keep pipes from freezing.
Orillia City Councillor Andrew Hill is a supporter of the plan.
He says its important for the city to make use of its current facilities instead of concentrating on a new one.
Hill would also like to seeĀ lower initital fees for the trial to help get the project of the ground.
