Police say a 40-vehicle pile up has claimed one life on a snowy stretch of highway in central Ontario.
Provincial police Const. Peter Leon says the person was pronounced dead at the scene on Highway 11, between Barrie and Orillia.
He says the woman got out of her car to assess the damage and was struck by another vehicle.
A major snow squall is passing through the area, blinding drivers.
Leon says up to 40 vehicles are involved in the crash in Oro-Medonte Township.
Several vehicles are damaged and a big rig is flipped over on its side.
Leon says one northbound lane of Highway 11 remains open, but southbound lanes at 9th Line will remain closed until at least 5 or 6 p.m.
