Begining tomorrow, you fingers are going to have to do a lot more walking if you want to do some talking.
That’s because 10 digit dialing comes to Orillia and area Saturday.
Glenn Pilley, director of the Canadian Numbering Administration and says ten-digit dialling is coming to the 705 exchange, because they are creating a new 249 area code.
He said 10-digit dialling is necessary because the same number may exist under both the 705 and 249 exchanges.
The changes will not impact long-distance areas.
Philley said it is a two-phase process. Effective Jan. 15 callers who key in the accustomed seven-digit number will get a message reminding customers that they should be dialling 10 digits.
The call will still be directed.
Starting March 19, with a week phase-in period, there will be no more reprieve for seven-digit dialers. The calls will no longer be passed through and customers will receive the notification letting them know that they must dial the full 10 digits.
Philley also says growth of the GTA is another reason to bring in the 10 digit dialing.
He says Toronto started creeping up into the 705 range
