Oro Medonte Mayor Harry Hughes was elected to the new position of Deputy Warden last month and says he and the current Warden, Wasaga Beach Mayor Cal Patterson should be able to work well together.
Hughes says before he considered running for the position, he consulted with the Warden just to make sure they both had similar objectives.
He says in the position of Deputy Warden he will help the Warden administer what is basicly a corporation with a budget in excess of half a billion dollars.
Hughes says a good portion of that money is directed to what he calls human services, like hospitals, paramedics and homes for the aged.
One of the major issues both Hughes, the Warden and other members of Council will have to tackle is the issue of waste management.
Hughes says increasing the amoung of waste being divereted from landfills will be a major objective of this council and if they cannot accomplish that then the County will have to look for additional landfill space.
That is something he says no one wants to do.
Hughes says the good news is the Mayors of both Barrie and Orillia also are facing a similar problem of what to do with their trash, and he anticipates that in the future both cities and the County will begin to work together to try and resolve this issue.
