The search for the body of a 23-year-old Cumberland Beach man has been suspended.
The OPP say that the recent freeze-up has resulted in unsafe conditions for divers, who cannot now enter the water to search Unless there is a significant thaw or a period of mild weather to breakup the ice, the search has been suspended indefinitely.
Missing is Owen Thompson, who went duck hunting with his 12-year-old nephew early Dec. 27 on icy Lake Couchiching near Cumberland Beach. Shawn Thompson, was pulled from the water wearing a life vest and was rushed to Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, where he later died.
Despite an extensive search of the shallow water where the canoe was found, along with an air search by the OPP helicopter, the body has not been found. Residents also did a shoreline search to no avail.
