Searching For A Solution Regarding Graffiti

Orillia | by Ken Hashizume
City of Orillia is considering a partnership with Crime Stoppers to combat graffiti.

The City of Orillia is looking at other ways to combat graffiti.

One idea is to have the City partner with Crime Stoppers.

Council was discussing a recommendation on graffiti by-law enforcement.

An amendment to a motion was made by Councillor Sarah Valiquette-Thompson at Monday's (12th) meeting.

Valiquette-Thonpson says one business in town has been hit with graffiti on a number of times.

She says the owner has invested thousands of dollars in clean up and surveillance cameras and it continues to happen.

Valiquette-Thompson says her suggestion is to offer a cash reward in order to get more tips.

She hopes those tips can lead to an arrest in these cases.

Valiquette-Thompson says the City can add to the Crime Stoppers reward as well as get the message out on their platforms.

She says there about a half a dozen known tags in the city and hopes the incentive will lead to an increase in tips.

Valiquette-Thompson says a report is due back to Council Committee and the Police Services Board will also provide feedback on this initiative.
